Zoe Pietsch Wins Prestigious Goethe-Institut Language Camp Scholarship

Zoe, a dedicated student with a passion for the German language, has been selected as a recipient of the esteemed Goethe-Institut Language Camp Scholarship. After her impressive entry, she was shortlisted and successfully completed an interview with a Goethe-Institut representative. In early April, it was officially announced that Zoe had secured the scholarship, with the institute expressing enthusiasm about the impact she will have on the Language Camp in Austria.

As a scholarship recipient, Zoe will have the extraordinary opportunity to immerse herself in the German language and culture from June 29 to July 12, 2025. Her dedication to her German studies has truly paid off, and she is undoubtedly deserving of this remarkable opportunity.

2026 Simpson Prize

The Simpson Prize is a national competition for Year 9 and 10 students that focuses on the service of Australians in World War One and World War Two.

The 2026 Simpson Prize question is: ‘Evaluate the usefulness of diary entries, letters, and photographs for providing evidence about the contrasting experiences and perspectives of Australians who served in either the First World War or the Second World War. Discuss the accuracy of this statement with reference to either WW1 or WW2′.

The Simpson Prize requires students to discuss and respond to the question from a variety of perspectives, individual and national, using a variety of sources. Students are expected to make effective use of a minimum of 4 provided sources from either the ‘2026 Simpson Prize WW1 Sources’ or the ‘2026 Simpson Prize WW2 Sources’ available at . Up to half of the response should also make use of information drawn from the student's own knowledge and research.

The 16 winners and runners-up, two from each state and territory, travel to Canberra to participate in a 3-day study program in early 2026. The results of the 2026 Simpson Prize will be available on this website at the conclusion of the Canberra Study Program in March. The 8 winners will travel to an overseas destination for an extensive commemorative study tour culminating in Anzac Day ceremonies at that location.

The Simpson Prize is a great opportunity for Year 9 and 10 students to participate in a nationwide essay competition, giving one winner and one runner-up from each State and Territory the opportunity to participate in Simpson Prize activities in 2026.

2025 Australian History Competition

The Competition is prepared by the History Teachers’ Association of Australia and run in conjunction with The Giant Classroom. While a primary goal has been to provide an interesting and challenging competition for students, we also see this as an opportunity to support teachers in the implementation of the new Australian Curriculum: History. It provides a quality resource that demonstrates approaches to the assessment of knowledge, skills and understandings.

In 2025, the competition will be offered to years 7, 8, 9 and 10. The Year 9-10 paper will be broadly based on the Australian Curriculum: History for years 9 and 10. The Year 7-8 paper will be broadly based on the Australian Curriculum: History for years 7 and 8. Separate prizes will be offered to state and national champions for each year group.
